Beware of a slip and fall as you head to the water this summer

If you’ve heard people in Trenton speak about a slip-and-fall accident, it probably brings to mind wintry images. An over-exuberant child slipping on black ice while running, or a frail old lady falling and breaking her hip outside the grocery store where the snow was not cleared properly. However, slip-and-fall accidents can happen all year round.

As the temperatures climb into the 80s and 90s in Trenton, summer can bring its own set of slip-and-fall accidents, when you head to spend time by the water.

Whether in someone’s house or at an aquatic center, it is easy to slip and injure yourself at a swimming pool. The combination of smooth surfaces and water from people getting out of the pool, or from poolside cleaning means you always need to take extra care.

Heading to the local marina to spend the day boating is another place to be careful due to the presence of water and algae, which can make the dockside surfaces and ramps slippery if not well maintained. You face the same danger on the boat itself.

Businesses are doing a lot more cleaning these days to ensure they keep their surfaces disinfected. Unfortunately, that can make the risk of slipping on the floor inside a waterside restaurant higher than before.

Property owners have a duty to ensure their premises are safe for visitors. Commercial property owners even more so, as they are making money out of you being on their property. If you do suffer a slip-and-fall accident and are injured, seek legal advice to find out if you have grounds for a premises liability claim.
